1. Scammers acquire comprehensive identity information (“fullz”) — name, date of birth, social security number or similar identifiers — often from illicit online marketplaces. 
2. They use this stolen data to create new Klarna accounts or to pass initial soft credit checks, which are designed for rapid approval in legitimate BNPL transactions. 
3. Once approved, scammers make large purchases of electronics and other goods. 
4. These items are resold quickly in secondary markets for cash. 

This scheme victimizes the actual individuals whose identities were stolen, not the scammers themselves, and can leave those victims with damaged credit records and unrecognized debts. 

Why It Spread on TikTok

Several factors contributed to the trend’s virality:
• Sensational Content: Videos showing large stacks of merchandise, receipts, or cash encourage curiosity and sharing. 
• Misleading Terminology: Calling it a “glitch” or “method” suggests legitimacy, even though it is fraudulent. 
• Social Proof: Some creators show alleged “results” without explaining the underlying illegality. 

However, not all online creators are promoting the scam — many are actively warning viewers that it carries serious legal risk.

Klarna itself has warned that posts claiming a harmless “method” are misleading and tied to fraud. Participating in such activities undermines the platform’s terms and can leave participants liable for full repayment and penalties. 

There is no evidence of a genuine programming error in Klarna’s systems that grants free goods to users. All current reports indicate intentional misuse of stolen data, not a technology flaw.

Authorities have described the behaviour underlying these videos as federal wire fraud and identity theft, offences that in many jurisdictions — including the United States — can carry decades in prison if prosecuted.
