In a time when immigrants are hunted by ICE in the United States, the language of “illegal” presence becomes a bitter irony. This land was taken not long ago through conquest, displacement, and broken treaties, long before modern borders existed. To criminalize movement on stolen ground is a historical farce that ignores its own origins. Mitákuye Oyás’iŋ is a Lakota phrase meaning “all my relations,” expressing the belief that all people, animals, land, and spirits are fundamentally connected. The title reminds us that no one exists outside the circle of belonging. What is done to one, is done to all.
