A song about climate change? The music on this website is usually more than just background jingles for videos. My thoughts and feelings are often embedded here. For example, the song "The quiet we ignored."
The phrase "the quiet we ignored" is the emotional core and key message of the song. In the context of these lyrics, which deal very clearly with climate change, missed opportunities, and the looming disaster, this line carries a double meaning.
Here is an analysis of why this phrasing was chosen:
1. The quiet as an unheard warning
The verses describe how nature has been playing "wrong" for a long time ("trees forgot their lines", "earth kept turning out of tune").
Initially, these changes weren't loud like a storm, but creeping and quiet (e.g., snow in April).
"The quiet" represents the subtle signs of nature that we, as a society, noticed but did not take seriously. We discussed "years and numbers" instead of listening to the quiet but pressing reality.
2. The quiet as collective silence (repression)
The text says: "we knew / we waited / we knew".
There was knowledge of the consequences, but people remained silent or postponed action ("spoke in maybe, soon").
This "quiet" is the deliberate looking away. It is the uncomfortable silence that arises when one knows an inconvenient truth but keeps quiet about it in everyday life to carry on as before.
3. The reversal in the finale
In the final chorus, it says:
"the quiet we ignored is calling / and it’s louder now inside"
This is the turning point. The silence (the repressed truth) is no longer quiet. It has become an inner scream ("louder now inside").
Because we ignored the external signs, the internal urgency (conscience, fear, realization) is now deafening.
The "quiet" transforms into the pressure to act.
"The quiet we ignored" is the sum of all missed moments in which action could have been taken, but wasn't. It is the realization that the silence and the inaction (the ignoring) were ultimately louder and more destructive than the storms themselves.
